The Valdorcia really is an area to be discovered, it is one of the most beautiful valleys in the world, UNESCO recognized this when it declared the Valdorcia a World Heritage Site. In spring, the surrounding countryside is an intense green which turns to the warm gold of the wheat in summer. Characteristic churches and old castles punctuate the landscape, they are reminders of the area’s rich history.

The cypress trees along the roads and the Mediterranean scrub are also characteristics of the landscape. Many species of wildlife live in this area including deer, wild boar, pheasants, hares, wolves, foxes and porcupines.
The Via Francigena was originally a Roman road known as the Cassia which linked Rome to Arezzo and later also Florence. Its route was changed in the Lombard era as the way through the Siennese hills was preferred to the swamps of the Val di Chiana. After 774, with the arrival of the Franks, it took the name Via Francigena and it became the main route for pilgrims travelling to Rome from northern Europe. The Via Francigena has been linked to the Valdorcia and the village of San Quirico d’Orcia for centuries, in 1154 it witnessed the historic meeting between Emperor Frederick I of Svevia, known as Barbarossa and the Papal messengers.

The historic car race known as the ‘Mille Miglia’ has passed through the village since 1927.

The delightful village of San Quirico d’Orcia lies at 424 metres above sea level, the climate is good and it is in a central position at the heart of the Valdorcia. All the other villages Montalcino, Pienza, Castiglion d’Orcia and Radicofani are easily reached, being just a few kilometers away.

Within the administrative district of San Quirico d’Orcia, we also find the castle of Vignoni and the village of  Bagno Vignoni which is well-known for its thermal water and unique thermal pool in the centre of the village. From San Quirico it’s possible to reach both Vignoni and Bagno Vignoni either on foot or by mountain bike along quiet unasphalted roads with delightful views.

From here it is also possible to visit the two symbols of the Valdorcia and indeed Tuscany, the Chapel of Vitaleta can be seen from the main road to Pienza and the clump of cypress trees can be seen along the Cassia (SS2) between San Quirico and Montalcino.
